FUTURE OF GET WENDOVER CYCLING

posted 13 Feb 2016, 12:58 by Eli Kling

At our recent AGM, after a thorough discussion, it was agreed that Get Wendover Cycling (GWC) had reached the end of its useful life and should be wound up as a formal organization.

Our constitution requires the group is officially dissolved with the agreement of the committee and members. To achieve this an Extraordinary General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 19 April at 64A Lionel Avenue at 7.30pm.

Money held in GWC’s bank account will be distributed as detailed in the constitution. The group has no other assets.

The committee believes that dissolving the group in this way will not prevent us in the future from campaigning or engaging in other relevant activity under the banner of GWC.

Transport Strategy Consultation Launched by BCC

posted 14 Dec 2015, 14:42 by Eli Kling

BCC's current 5 year transport strategy, LTP3, ends next year and a draft follow on strategy, LTP4, has just been published and can be viewed on their "have your say" website page. Consultation runs until 29th January.

The document covers all types of transport looking ahead to the year 2036. Previous transport plans covered a much shorter time span and contained specific targets and plans. The new plan covering a 20 year period is as a consequence more a visionary blueprint with no specific targets or spending commitments. This approach is understandable when future government funding for transport, even in the short term, is probably not yet known and likely to be significantly reduced.

Cycling is covered in detail (pages 45,46 and47), the benefits to health and the environment being recognised. Only time will tell whether detailed plans are created and funds made available for the necessary work.

GWC would like to encourage you to look at this draft and use the opportunity to comment to air your views.

MAINTENANCE OF AMBER WAY CYCLE ROUTE

posted 1 Oct 2015, 13:23 by Eli Kling

Get Wendover Cycling (GWC) have for over five years been pressing BCC/TfB to improve the surface of the Amber Way cycle route between Wendover and Stoke Mandeville, this being a dual use footway.

After several chasers TfB replied that the surfaces did not meet their category 1  definition of failure, hence no action would be taken. We then asked  for a definition of a category 1 failure for a dual use path on the assumption it would not be the same as that used for a road.
As no reply was received
, at the Wendover LAF on 5th July 2014, we asked what criteria is used to decide when a dual use path warrants repair and with limited funds available, who decides where work would be done. Bill Chapple chairing the meeting considered the question reasonable and promised an answer. Having received no response by October we
contacted him directly and he promised to bring the lack of response to the attention of TfB.
In November an article in the Bucks Herald headed " £2.5 million works to pavements under way" stated "Pavements prioritised for treatment have been chosen by councillors with each one nominating two sites in their division". As a result of this article we had a meeting with Chris Adams our BCC councillor on the 29th January. On explaining what we were trying to achieve he agreed to raise the issues with TfB.  As a result of this two pronged approach TfB eventually carried out an inspection and decided that there were only two points needing attention and that the condition of the rest of the path was acceptable.

GWC have responded expressing disappointment and asking again what criteria they use for assessing when the surface of a dual use path warrants attention. Weeds and grass now growing through the surface will, if left unchecked, result in the need for major work. We await a reply.
It is however a sad reflection on the support given to cycling by TfB in that it took the combined action of two county councillors to elicit this unsatisfactory response.

UPDATE ON GOVERNMENT APPROVED CYCLING AND WALKING STRATEGY

posted 16 Jul 2015, 14:20 by Eli Kling

In January cycling in the UK reached a turning point when the Coalition Government decided to include a  Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy into the forthcoming Infrastructure Bill. Although this was heralded by sustainable transport campaign groups as a major step forward, it is perhaps only the first step in what could be a long journey.
CTC now report that at a recent cycling conference, Transport Minister for walking and cycling, Robert Goodwill MP, announced that he had instructed Department of Transport officials to prepare the legislative order that will bring into effect the legal provisions in the Infrastructure Act requiring the Government to adopt a Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy. Details of what the bill is asking for visit www.ctc.org.uk.
In the meantime it has been reported that the the new Government has clawed back £23 million, originally promised by the Coalition. This was the first part of a funding programme to make cities more bike friendly. So much for progress.

FREE BIKE CHECKS ARE AGAIN ON OFFER IN WENDOVER

posted 8 Jun 2015, 14:52 by Eli Kling

Following a request from Get Wendover Cycling, Martin Wilkins, Cycle-tech, has again agreed to carry out free bike checks in Wendover.

His mobile workshop will be on Manor Waste 11am-4pm on Sunday July 5th so bring your bike along and have it checked over by a professional bike mechanic. Any parts that you may decide to have replaced such as cables and inner tubes, and he has the parts with him, will need to be paid for.

On previous visits Martin has been kept busy pumping up tyres, repairing buckled wheels, adjusting gears, fitting new inner tubes and dispensing advice on how to keep your bike in a safe condition.

So whether you have a bike that you would like checked or just wish to talk bike maintenance or cycling in general please visit Manor Waste on Sunday 5th July between 11am and 4pm.

For more information on this event contact either brian@bostockshort.com or martin@cycle-tech.co.uk.

FUTURE OF GET WENDOVER CYCLING

posted 24 May 2015, 14:05 by Eli Kling

In July 2008 an already existing cycling support group adopted a formal constitution using the title Get Wendover Cycling, our objective being to encourage cycling locally and to have an active membership.

Over the years we have been successful in organising the provision of cycle racks, supporting the adoption of local signed routes and running an annual family cycle ride. We have created a series of maps showing how existing routes can be improved. These are currently being considered by Bucks County Council for funding.

Recently we have found it difficult to recruit new committee members to take on the responsibilities of promoting the interests of the group and now for reasons of ill health, age and workload that included much travel abroad, the committee has decided to be less proactive.

We plan to keep the website active (www.getwendovercycling.org) and report items of local interest to cyclists and offer assistance to anybody interested in taking up cycling. We will not be maintaining a formal membership, the website will be our means of contact and communication.

The groundwork for a local cycling campaign group will in other words be maintained and the outgoing committee members hope younger enthusiastic cyclists will emerge to take over GWC and bring new ideas and energy for promoting safe cycling in the Wendover area. If you have an interest in taking this on or know someone who does please get in touch with either:
